2000 years old…..that’s older than ME!

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Roman Glass jewelry is truly spectacular!  These 2000 year old shards have been unearthed by archaeologists on ancient city sites once part of the Roman Empire.

The iridescent colors have evolved gradually over the centuries as a result of the glass’s reactions with sun, water, and the Earth it was buried in.  DSC03105

The Vintage Lady is lucky to have found two amazing artists in Israel who make this beatiful jewelry!  Everyone woman should own at least one piece of this spectacular jewelry!

Wood….by any other name….is a Feather!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

How strange is that?  Wood….Feather?????  Well, maybe if it is Featherwood!  Recently artist Buzz Coren contacted me after seeing the VL website.  He does this amazing line of jewelry out of wood…that is truly light as a “feather.” His work is made exclusively for galleries and boutiques…so the VL is MOST happy that he contacted her.  He cuts the earrings from a large block of dyed and natural hardwood veneer about 275 layers thick.  He actually dyes most of the veneers himself and no two pairs are ever exactly alike.  They are coated with a durable semi-gloss finish and fitted with surgical steel earwires.  The VL is happy…and proud…to carry the work of this amazing artist!  Thanks Buzz!DSC03067

An Amazing Week!

Saturday, November 14th, 2009

This has certainly been an amazing week!  The response to our new web site has been overwhelming…thanks to everyone who checked it out, made purchases  and forwarded  it to others!  I’ll be adding new things this week…so check back often!

Harpers Ferry is an amazing town….with something for everyone – history, water, hiking and shopping of course!  Last night we enjoyed the “hiking” part.  We attended a special viewing of  National Geographic’s documentary on the Appalachian Trail.  It will be on TV this week – and you really should see it!  The AT is a real treasure of America!

The headquarters for the AT is just up the street – and HF is considered the mid point for thru hikers.  When they start arriving in town it is so exciting and interesting!  For more info about the AT check out their web site:  www.appalachiantrail.org

The Adventures of a Web Site!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

A few months ago, I met an amazing new friend, Susan Benjamin – owner of Greater Voice Enterprises. What started out being a discussion about some great new marketing ideas – evolved into redesigning the web site for The Vintage Lady! It was time for an “over haul” – and I quickly knew she was the person to help me. Then….enter Steve Sickman, of Steve Sickman Designs….together they have created a “new and improved” Vintage Lady online presence! Of course….it has not been without its challenges…mainly ME! The three of us have each had our role in getting the site ready….however, I think I am going to get fired….at least if I was paying myself I would fire me! I have lost pages….moved things that shouldn’t have been moved….it has been an “adventure” that is for sure! I hope you find The “NEW” Vintage Lady an enjoyable shopping experience! I will be adding new items weekly….there will be special sales….many interesting articles…and of course….”sassy” comments on a variety of subjects! Thank you Susan and Steve for transforming The Vintage Lady….she has “arrived!”

Getting ready!!

Sterling Silver?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

As you may have noticed, The Vintage Lady of Harpers Ferry carries lots of sterling silver bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. So, this may make you wonder: why sterling silver and not plain silver? Perhaps, you think, it’s less pure.

Actually, yes, it is …but that’s a good thing. Here’s why: silver tends to tarnish quickly – just look at your grandmother’s silver tea set for evidence of that. And, it bends and breaks easily. So, jewelers frequently add 7.5% copper to strengthen the silver and ensure it maintains its healthy glow.

The copper solution also explains why sterling silver jewelry contains a stamp reading .925 or 92.5% . That’s the amount of silver jewelry must contain to officially be deemed “sterling”.

Regardless of the mix, silver came a long way to reach The Vintage Lady…not to mention your jewelry boxes. The ancients living in the islands near the Aegean Sea began separating silver from lead in the 4th millennium BCE. Today, though, it’s primarily mined in Mexico and Peru.

Sterling silver is beautiful, classy, and, yes, priced to make you smile!
